Still more buffalos. 

Bien que très très gros et très très puissants, ces animaux ne sont ni agressifs ni même inquiétants, sauf bien sûr à aller les provoquer. La femelle, que l'on reconnaît à ses cornes légèrement incurvées vers l'intérieur, porte comme le mâle barbiche au menton.

Although they are very, very big and very, very powerful, these animals are neither aggressive nor really frightening, unless, of course they are provoked. The females, which are recognizable by their horns which turn inwards slightly, have a goatee on their chins just like the males.

Quasi exterminée au début du siècle, l'espèce se reconstitue peu à peu grâce aux efforts d'éleveurs passionnés comme O'Brien qui, pour le bien de ses bisons et à terme celui des hommes, s'efforce également de reconstituer la prairie originelle.

Almost completely extinct by the beginning of the last century, the species is being restored, thanks to the efforts of passionate stockbreeders like O’Brien, who, for the benefit of his buffalos and in the long run mankind, is also determined to restore the original prairie.

Dan O' Brien. Je connaissais son engagement.  Mais le rencontrer sur ses terres, être accueillie avec autant de simplicité, autant de gentillesse, l'écouter parler de son ranch, de ses bisons et puis glisser tout doucement vers des sujets plus littéraires, faire la connaissance de sa famille, Jill, sa compagne, Jillian tout juste mariée à Pete, Earny trop vieux désormais pour s'occuper des bisons, autant de personnages que j'ai appris à connaître en lisant Les Bisons de Broken Heart.

Dan O' Brien. I recognized his commitment in his writing.  But to meet him on his land, to be welcomed with such sincerity, such kindness, to listen to him speak about his ranch, about his buffalos, and then to slip quite naturally on to other topics that were more literary, to meet his family: Jill, his companion (partner?); Jillian, who had recently married Pete; Earny, now too old to work with the buffalo; so many characters that I had come to know when reading Buffalo for the Broken Heart.

Oui, à n'en pas douter, notre passage sur le ranch de Dan O'Brien a été un des sommets de notre voyage !

Yes, there is no doubt about it, our visit to Dan O’Brien’s ranch was one of the high points of our trip!
